Annual Report 2022

Who we are

Union of Ukrainian non-governmental organisations and Muslims who adhere to Islam in its moderate sense and work in the interests of Ukraine and Ukrainian society.

Strategic goals:
1. Introduce the Islamic culture.

2. Promote civic engagement among Muslims.

3. Development of the Muslim community of Ukraine and promotion of its interests in various spheres of life.

4. Formation of an all-Ukrainian active youth platform.

Preface

After the founding the Council of Muslims, which took place in November 2021, the organization continued its fruitful activities for the benefit of the Ukrainian society. The Council of Muslims continued the work of the All-Ukrainian Association Alraid, which was started in the early 90s.

During the congress, the organization received congratulations from the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, which was recognition of the merits of Ukrainian Muslims in their service to the benefit of Ukrainian society.

However, with the beginning of Russian aggression, the activities of the Council of Ukrainian Muslims have changed significantly. A large number of Muslims left the country, and the economic and humanitarian situation worsened. However, the Council of Muslims continued its activities in various fields for the benefit of the Ukrainian society and the country's Muslims.

We summarize the most important aspects of the activities of the Council of  Muslims in 2022.

Educational activities

At the beginning of 2022, 5 campaigns to familiarize both Islam and the mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were held in Kyiv: "Ask a Muslim" and "Muhammad is mercy for the worlds." It was impossible to continue these actions in other cities of Ukraine due to Russian aggression. However, our imams gave online lectures on this topic.

The All-Ukrainian Association for the Study of the Holy Quran organized regular seminars and circles for reading the Quran in the Islamic cultural centers of the country during the summer months.

Introductory meetings were also held in Islamic cultural centers. For example, 50 students and teachers of the Faculty of Civilizational Studies of the Ukrainian Catholic University visited the Islamic Cultural Center of Lviv.

                  Despite all the difficulties, in Kyiv, the gymnasium "Our Future" continued its work with the start of the new academic year in September. At the moment, it has about 350 students.

By tradition, in December, events dedicated to Arabic culture and language were held in 4 Islamic cultural centers. They were timed to coincide with the International Day of the Arabic Language.

Media and public relations

The Council of Muslims continued to support the work of the site "Islam for All", aimed at familiarizing a wide range of readers with Islam. The website "Islam in Ukraine" continued it work also.

A translation of the meanings of the Holy Quran in Ukrainian was also printed.

With the beginning of the Russian aggression, the information and PR departments of the Council stepped up their efforts to convey real information about the war in Ukraine. Speakers of the Council of Muslims spoke in the media, where they talked about the suffering and problems faced by the Muslims of Ukraine and the Ukrainian society due to Russian aggression. Council volunteers provided assistance to the media and journalists who came to Ukraine to cover the military situation.

President of the Council of Muslims Seyran Aryfov was awarded a diploma of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. It was handed over personally by the head of the Ukrainian parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk. It was awarded for services to the Ukrainian people. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Culture Alexander Tkachenko, Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar and other high-ranking officials.

The Council of Muslims received congratulations on the occasion of the beginning of the month of Ramadan, as well as on the holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha from the President and Prime Minister of Ukraine.

Representatives of the Council of Muslims took part in the twenty-sixth general conference of the European Forum of Muslim Youth and Student Associations, which was held in the capital of Finland, Helsinki, from November 4 to 7.

In October, the activists of the Islamic Cultural Center in Lviv took part in the All-Ukrainian environmental campaign for planting trees.

Sheikh Murat Suleymanov, Mufti of Ukraine, took part in a number of round tables, conferences and seminars on issues of religion, interfaith dialogue.

Center for interreligious and interfaith dialogue " Libertas " in partnership with the Islamic Cultural Center named after Muhammad Asada held a round table on "Christianity and Islam in Modern Ukraine: Dialogue in the Conditions of War and Ways of Cooperation".

                 Representatives of the Islamic cultural centers of Kyiv, Lviv and Chernivtsi participate in the work of the Council of Religions in their cities.

The delegation of the Council of Muslims took part in the International Conference on Interfaith Dialogue in Qatar in May.

Humanitarian sphere

In January 2022, before the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia, the Council of Muslims with the support of the Muslimehelfen organization and support from other organizations held a traditional winter campaign to distribute coal to needy families in the Kherson region. Assistance was received by 300 Muslim families.

With the support of the Muslimehelfen organization, a food aid project for immigrants and the poor was implemented, as well as a medical bag project for patients.

In January 2022, food packages were also distributed in the southern regions of Ukraine. In total, more than 1,200 food packages were handed over.

After the Russian invasion and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, Islamic cultural centers in various cities of Ukraine (Lviv, Chernivtsi, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhia, Kharkiv) began to provide temporary shelter for refugees and helped with the evacuation.

Also, with the support of the organization Muslimehelfen, a minibus was purchased for the implementation of volunteer projects, helping the wounded, sick and elderly.

During the year, promotions for the distribution of food packages were held in three stages in several cities. Within their framework, more than 3,000 food packages were distributed in Zaporizhia, Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Chernivtsi, Kharkiv and Lviv.

Activists of the Council of Muslims provided assistance to refugees directly at the crossing points of Ukraine's border with Poland and Romania. Also, a regular distribution of food and hot tea was organized at the Lviv railway station.

During the Holy month of Ramadan, the Council of Muslims organized regular collective iftars in three Islamic cultural centers (Kyiv, Lviv, Chernivtsi).

As part of the action for the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, clothes were distributed - 325 children received them.

Council also organized the distribution of household chemicals for those in need. 500 Muslim families received kits with the most necessary household chemicals .

The Council of Muslims has implemented a project to provide medical care. 200 home first-aid kits were donated to the sick and needy. A permanent pharmacy was also created        in the Islamic Cultural Center of Lviv. Activists of the Council of Muslims donated part of the medicines and medicines to hospitals and hospitals.

During the days of the Eid al-Adha holiday, Islamic cultural centers throughout Ukraine distributed several tons of meat from sacrificial animals. It was received by needy Muslims in many cities of the country.

In the Islamic cultural center of the city of Sumy, a permanent distribution point for clothes and children's toys for refugees and victims was created.

Chaplain service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Imams-chaplains from the first days of Russian aggression visited Muslim soldiers at the front, providing them with counseling and psychological support, handed them food and medicine, and also organized the funeral of dead Muslims. The head of the chaplain service, Khadzhi Murad Putilin, was awarded a diploma from the Verkhovna Rada.

Also, the Council of Muslims donated more than 250 kg of halal stew to Muslim soldiers at the front.
